When Colossus shut down “for good” a few weeks ago, most assumed something bigger and badder would replace this iconic roller coaster, whilst doing away with yet another piece of Magic Mountain history.
Instead, Six Flags has chosen to give us the best of all worlds, a full restoration of this original classic, modernized and upgraded with today’s coaster advances to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience.
Here’s the full press release:

Touted as a “world-record-breaking hybrid coaster,” TWISTED COLOSSUS will “provide ride experiences never before possible on wooden coasters, such as over-banked turns and inversions….numerous exciting components including a ‘top gun’ element, the western hemisphere’s first ‘high five’ element, and a Zero G roll.”
It’s a great move for the park, which could use a dose of nostalgia after seeing the removal of a classic attraction in the Log Jammer and the conversion of the old themed Mooseburger Lodge into a hollow “sports bar.” Full Throttle is a fantastic coaster, and was a great addition to the park, but it’s bland, un-themed, on-the-cheap queue and lead up to the ride is too much of a reminder of the lack of identity this park can suffer from.
It’s also nice seeing another considerable investment being made to the park, as rumors of its demise seem to always be on the forefront. Restoring this classic, instead of simply shutting it down, sends a nice message: Magic Mountain isn’t going anywhere.
It will be great to see Colossus back in action again, and here’s to hoping they include a landscaping budget to make this even more than another coaster in the parking lot.
No matter what, I will be there. I’ve always said, as long as Magic Mountain builds it, I will come. Full Throttle got me there last year, and Twisted Colossus will bring me back again.
Here are some cool elements I noticed when viewing the simulation video posted on their web site…
Way to go, Six Flags!
