[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Paramount has just released a new trailer and poster for the next adventure for the crew of the Enterprise.
STAR TREK BEYOND looks to be infused with life, color, and energy. At a glance, this appears to be a “best of” Trek wrapped into one film.
For a younger Star Wars generation of fans, it retains the scale, spectacle and fantasy introduced in the J.J. Abrams incarnation of the franchise. For the hardcore old-school Trekkers who prefer the more episodic character-driven feel of the Original Series, this seems to be playing with different character combinations.
Where the first two films seemed to hone in on the Kirk-Spock-Uhura trio and the ensemble as a whole, BEYOND gives us some different dynamics.
I’m noticing Spock and McCoy sharing screen time together in particular. Some of the best episodes of the classic series didn’t even focus on Kirk. I’m thinking of episodes such as THE GALILEO SEVEN or ALL OUR YESTERDAYS, where Spock and McCoy, despite their many differences, would still team up to overcome the obstacle in front of them. Spock’s intense logic would sometimes give way to McCoy’s passionate humanity, and sometimes McCoy had to defer to his logical friend.
And for those who prefer the original cast and Next Generation cast of movies, there seems to have a credible enemy threat as massive as the Borg, led by a really pissed off alien.
I also love when today’s special effects technology can introduce a Trek level of science to us visually. In this trailer, I noticed the Enterprise at warp speed from a distance, moving at incredible speeds surrounded by a warp bubble. This kind of texture can be so easily be overlooked in a film packed with spectacle, but these are the moments the Trekkers clamor for.
So far so good from what we’re seeing.
STAR TREK BEYOND beams into theaters on July 22.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
