[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Well, it’s official: A true Ghostbusters sequel/reboot is truly the works.

The new script will be co-written by Bridesmaids (2011) director, Paul Feig, as he confirmed via Twitter:

I can’t wait to see a new adventure on screen, whether with an entirely new cast of characters, or in combination with returning members from the original.

Feig is a talent, and I’m sure will call upon his particular strengths to deliver something unique, with wit, charm, and humor.

I’m hoping Sony recognizes the epic franchise potential of this wonderful asset they have.

How amazing would it be if Jennifer Lawrence (above) was a Ghostbuster? And hey, why not bring Sigourney Weaver back? I would be first in line!

Personally, I always felt having a diverse group of characters, both women and men, different age ranges, would keep the story fresh and interesting. Feig seems to be emphasizing “gender” as a core story point here, which does feel un-Ghostbuster-like, considering the original film never treaded along these lines. The fact that the team was all-male always seemed incidental, not purposeful, and certainly without any specific reasoning.

But I’m guessing Feig wasn’t brought in to rehash the original. Rather, to modernize, freshen, and differentiate the concept for today’s audience.

I’m hoping this will be more than the gimmick being used for the rumored Expendebelles film in the works as a reaction to Stallone’s Expendables

The Expendables gives us a cast of about 20 testosterone-driven action heroes of the past known for their brawn. It’s only natural to counter that with a similar all-female group.

I’d be totally down to check out the probable casting of Sigourney Weaver, Brigitte Nielsen, Grace Jones (above), Michelle Yeoh, and others.

With Ghostbusters taking a similar approach, I’m hoping the humor isn’t about the gimmick, and finds a way to infuse a heart and soul just as the original unexpectedly found within itself.

I think McCarthy is hilarious, charming, and inspired, and casting her as one of the new Ghostbusters would be a stroke of genius. She doesn’t need the “all-female Ghostbusters” gimmick to help her out. Her comedy speaks for itself.

The stories that broke all over the media seem to have stemmed from Feig’s Twitter feed and the trades with insider confirmation. Sony hasn’t put out an official press release about the hire with a plot synopsis. This is simply the development phase, where anything can happen. Quite frankly, Ghostbusters has been in limbo in this phase going on about 20 years now, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this ultimately morphs into something else, or could even go away entirely.

While Feig is currently putting pen to the paper, with the world at his fingertips, I would challenge him to think big! The scope of this thing doesn’t need to be Avengers-massive, but it can be huge in its own way.

With today’s special effects technology, there is an entire palette at the disposal of the filmmakers to deliver amazing visuals set in the world of the Ghostbusters that can be so fresh and exciting and open up the possibilities of so many previously unreachable stories. Let’s tap into this!

I’d love to see a story where Ray, faced with a massive paranormal obstacle, has to recruit and train a new younger team of Ghostbusters, whether it be women, or men, or both, to save New York once again.

If by some miracle Bill Murray would agree to some sort of role, he would be hilarious as a reluctant mentor, always rolling his eyes when Ray defers to him to give the youngsters a few pointers. This could be a great passing of the torch to today’s generation story.

The focus can be on the new team as they are put through a hilarious Ghostbusters boot camp, stumble and fail with blunder after blunder when they hit the real world armed with their proton packs, then are ultimately called upon to summon their courage, save the city, and become heroes, poised and ready for the sequels to follow.

This can be a great epic action-sci fi-comedy that honors the original and properly restarts the franchise with limitless potential.

If you are truly going to embark on an ambitious re-telling of Ghostbusters, Sony, then go all-out, take risks, make it big, and above all-else, don’t be afraid to cross the streams. It may be dangerous, but it can save the world.
